WATER & FOOD
Make sure your diabetic pet has fresh water at all times. Use glass or ceramic dishes with flat bottom.
My diabetic Dicky likes to drink water from filtered water spout. I had to give up drinking water from filtered water spout as there is no way to sanitize drinking spout to avoid parasitic infection in humans…
I rather have this scenario but that is a fantasy waiting to happen…

CASE STUDY RE: INSULIN
I will share my case study and information on where to get insulin that will help you keep the cost down.
When Dicky was prescribed Lantus, I nearly fainted when I pharmacist at Walmart told me it was $339.14 for 10 ml vial (1000 units) ! Pharmacist stated that this Lantus vial is to be discarded after 28 days. Even with my financial stability, this is a huge chunk of money to be thrown away each 28 days especially since Dicky is going to be needing 1 unit a day at maximum of 30-60 units per month depending on the need to increase dose to 2 units per day. I had no choice but to get Lantus vial that day, as I needed to stabilize his glucose levels right away. Insulin in the vial is same as insulin in the pen, however 10 ml vial contains 1000 units of insulin vs 3 ml pen which contains 300 units.
Later, I did extensive research, and figured out, that I could be using 3 ml pen instead, with significant savings, since Lantus pen is less expensive. Even using Lantus pen, I was only using 60 units maximum and throwing away 240 units, since according to pharmacist, insulin has to be discarded 28 days after initially using it. At the time when I was just about to start using the last Lantus pen on hand, I had a consult with a new vet for Dicky. He advised me that unused portion of Lantus does not need to be discarded after 28 days and it could be used until all the product is gone ! This vet is a very reputable vet with over 40 yrs of experience. He further elaborated that pharmacist have to say what they did, so they can sell more product and make big pharma companies more money !
ORDERING LANTUS
LANTUS PEN
After some research, I ordered a pack of 5 LANTUS PENS from Canadian Pharmacy and as precaution I refrigerated it upon arrival. It was shipped with ice pack. Total cost of $185.00 for 5 pens – 3 ml each and with shipping it came to $214.99. ORDER AT…
Lantus Insulin U-100 is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in multiple species including cats and dogs. It comes in various forms and strengths with corresponding syringes for each strength.
Lantus Insulin U-100 are used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus to aid in maintaining a normal glucose level. Insulin is responsible for the proper usage of glucose by cells in the body. It is given by subcutaneous injection. Purchase Insulin syringes separately. Multiple types of Insulin exist, so make sure you match the right type of syringe to your Insulin. Insulin needs refrigeration.
LANTUS PEN & ITS PARTS
With Lantus pen there are two choices of administering. So lets learn how Lantus pen works and its components…
I would strongly urge you to use .3 ml or 1 ml insulin syringe (appropriate for thus type of insulin U-100) to draw proper dose of insulin out from the pen instead of using needle tip designed to work with Lantus pen. Here is why… Sometimes these devices, as any other devices, can malfunction and not deliver proper dosing. Administering too much insulin can cause a significant drop in pet’s blood glucose level and this can be deadly. That has been my fear from the start, however, using standard insulin syringe eliminates my fear of administering too much or too little insulin.
Here is comparison of two different syringes. The one to be used with Lantus is type U-100. Notice the difference in syringe dose spacing for U-100 vs. the U-40
My preference is 31G needle thickness & 8 mm needle length. There are few varieties of needle thickness and lengths
1 ACTIVATE Lantus pen by gently rolling it between your hands for 10-15 seconds
2 REMOVE Lantus cap, exposing rubber seal
3 REMOVE cap from the syringe bottom to expose push barrel
4 PUSH the syringe barrel all the way in
5 DRAW out proper insulin dose
6 INJECT under pets skin after making sure your pet had a meal right before administering Lantus or any other insulin
