Dehydration & Sub-Q Fluids

LACTATED RINGER is used for dehydration in dogs & cats.

NEEDLES TO USE:

For large dogs use 18-22 gauge

For small dogs & cats use 23 gauge

For puppies & kittens use 10 ml syringe & 23-25 gauge needles or butterfly needles

It is crucial that the fluids be warmed prior to administration

COLD fluids will sap body heat and vital force even further, even if the fluids are at room temperature.

Bag of fluids needs to be placed into warm water for about ten to fifteen minutes prior to use. Additionally, the tubing that carries the fluid to the needle can be put in a bowl of warm water, as the fluids may cool off during transit through an unheated tube.

SUB Q DOSE

To help battle the dehydration give LRS every 8 hours:

1 lb kitten/puppy – 10 ml

Kitten/puppy 6-8 weeks old 12 ml

MARKING THE FLUID BAG

The space between each number is measured as 100 ml
The 1/2 space between numbers is measured as 50 ml
