Being a non profit animal rescue with a small sanctuary and having diplomas in Holistic Animal Health, I wanted to share the protocol for treating PANLEUK the Holistic way. I have worked on this protocol with a very famous Vet from Nashville, TN. He is the one that recommended Sodium Ascorbate as well as Acemannen (form of aloe extract.) The rest of supportive supplements are the best of the best of natural antibiotics, viral infections and immune boosting supplements.
In Panleuk, the most important thing is to boost immune system and attack viruses.
PANLEUK CLINICAL SIGNS/SYMPTOMS:
Vomiting, diarrhea (bloody), dehydration, lethargy, sudden & unexpected death

When there is nausea and nonstop vomiting or mouth gets filled with saliva. Thirst is lost, and the color of the stool may be green or bloody.

BOOSTING IMMUNE SYSTEM
Vitamin C – in form of Sodium Ascorbate
I learned about this form of Vitamin C from a very famous vet from Nashville, TN. I am sharing the E-mail I received after I reached out for guidance on choosing acemannen. I do consult with this vet on case to case basis.
Sodium Ascorbate is very easy to give to animals as it tastes like watered down salt.
Some old research from the 1980s talks about this form of vitamin C treating viral infections in cats (FeLV). It is the best immune booster one of my vets found for cats.
Sodium ascorbate is different from other vitamin C types because it’s a neutral pH powder with a very mild, slightly salty taste. You can even sprinkle it on kibble for feral cats who share a food dish. Being only slightly salty, for most cats, it acts as a palatant and makes their food taste better. And it’s very cost-effective.
Add 1/8 teaspoon of sodium ascorbate to 2 daily feedings. It is another safe preventative to give cats. It’s water soluble, so there no chance of toxicity. To help quickly with the paneleuk, try the high-dose to bowel tolerance on the sick cats, unless they have bad diarrhea as a symptom.
For the cat who is eating add 1/8 tsp to food twice daily. If cat is not eating, add it to some bone broth and syringe feed him/her. The bone broth would also help by providing some protein.
Make sure cat gets at least 500 mg twice daily. If cat does not get loose stools, you could go up to 1000 mg twice daily. If a pet consumes more sodium ascorbate vitamin C than its body can absorb, it flushes out as loose stool. There’s no toxic buildup or anything, so it’s safe to try higher doses.
EXAMPLE: 4 cats, fed twice daily. Split one 5 oz can between all 4 for 1 feeding.
So, 500 mg is 1/8 tsp. For 4 cats, give 4/8 (1/2) teaspoon in one 5 oz can. Twice daily.
The recommended amount is 500 mg to 1,000 mg two times daily, depending on how much cat(s) can take without getting loose stools.
You can use any brand in powdered form.
Acemannan
Acemannan is an immunomodulatory polysaccharide extracted from the popular healing herb Aloe Vera.
Years ago, the FDA approved injectable Acemannan for treating Fibrosarcomas and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). But since injectable Acemannan is no longer available, the oral variety is your only choice.
You can buy Acemannan online and without a prescription.
Acemannan is a D – isomer mucopolysaccharide in aloe vera leaves. This compound has potential immunostimulant, antiviral, antineoplastic, and gastrointestinal properties.
DOSING – CAPSULES
The recommended dosing on the bottle is for humans.
Downsize the dosing for cats, vet recommended:
1/4 adult human dose for cats 10-30 pounds
1/8 adult human dose for cats under 10 pounds
It can be used as a preventative at the same dosage. It’s a great immune booster.

COCONUT WATER
Coconut water is very good to help hydrate as well it is natural source of electrolytes and it helps with diarrhea. I prefer any packaging other than aluminum can. Recommendation – do natural med for at least 1 week after diarrhea stops. Also give to any cats exposed PRIOR to symptoms and continuing for at least 1 week (or up to 2-3 weeks to be on the safe side)
Give as much coconut water as they need to stay hydrated. Check for dehydration every 2 hours or so and sub q fluids or syringe coconut water as needed
HEALING CRISIS
Healing crisis is a state animals enter when they stop eating to heal themselves. DO NOT STRESS IF YOUR ANIMAL STOPS EATING. That may be the best thing to happen! It is when animals stop eating, that they have a better chance of survival according to a very famous vet Dr. Martin Goldstein. In his book THE NATURE OF ANIMAL HEALING, he talks about “HEALING CRISIS”. This is when animal stops eating so they can heal themselves.
However, if you have young animals or animals any age, and they are in HEALING CRISIS, you need to give them supportive supplements that are full of nutrition but not hard to digest. Such supplements are colostrum, bone broth, goat milk and egg yolk, which are all full of nutrients, yet easy to digest.
CASE STUDY – DECEMBER 2022
Camila was the first cat to get sick. She would just sit curled up with head down and drooling. I took her to vet and she was diagnosed with pneumonia. I refused antibiotics and steroids as I always have alternative holistic meds that work even better than allopathic meds.
When I came home I started her on Yarrow which is the first herb to grab for pneumonia. I also gave her Licorice which acts as anti-inflammatory, more potent than Prednisone. She was better in two days and her symptoms subsided. I continued meds for two weeks and she fully recovered. I did not know at that time that Camila had Panleuk as vet misdiagnosed! Shortly after, when Cody got sick, he had same symptoms as Camila. Cody and Camila were siblings who in summer of 2017 survived Corona virus. Cody was always on a slim side, while Camila was more on a solid side. I took Cody to vet and he was diagnosed with bad teeth. Without my approval vet administered Convenia shot! Cody passed away 12 hours later! I was heart-broken, as this was a cat that survived Corona at 4 weeks of age. Someting was not right here I just could not figure what!
The very next day, Paris, age 6 popped pure blood! Paris was a kitten whom I delivered during breached labor. I rushed Paris to Emergency and 20 minutes later, I learned that he was in final stages of Panleuk, yet there was not a single symptom to alert me that he is even ill! Vet came in waiting room and invited me to come say good-bye as his white count was zero and he was going into cardiac arrest. I could not believe how fast my world crumbled and how my heart ached from what was happening to Paris. Vet said Paris was “throwing” blood cloths and was now blind. His heart kept stopping and he was being revived a few times until I realized I needed to let him go. I was forever scarred and forever sad for losing my boy!
Then a moment later a horrific thought rushed through my head about safety of my other cats. I also realized that Cody had panleuk and he died because vet gave antibiotic and shattered his immune system and Cody did not have a chance to fight this virus! I then realized Camila also had Panleuk, except she beat it as Yarrow and Licorice I was giving her for alleged pneumonia, were both also very potent antiviral herbs!
A day after I lost Paris, Jagger got sick. Same symptoms that Camila and Cody had. I did not take him to vet and instead decided to try to save him myself. I also administered a “coctail” of natural antibiotics and immune system boosting remedies to all cats only 3 times before all cats run away just by seeing me coming towards them.
Meanwhile, as explained earlier on this page about Healing Crisis, Jagger entered this state when he stopped eating for 3 days. He is not a cat I can readily medicate, so I was able to dose him and give sub-Q twice. On the 4th day, he came out of his hiding place and drank some water. He then walked over to area where we serve raw meat and “asked” for some. After he ate the raw meat, he went and nibbled on some wet food. At this moment I knew he would survive. The next day he continued to improve, he was eating more raw and wet food and drinking water as well as grooming himself. He slowly regained his strength and gained the weight he lost during these 3 days of fasting.
Jagger lives happily ever after…
No other cats in my sanctuary got sick from this horrible virus. I contribute this to their strong immune system, which I boost daily with colostrum, probiotics, glandulars and other immune system boosting supplements.
Remember in Panleuk, prevention, the most important thing is to boost immune system and attack viruses. This can be accomplished by adding basics as colostrum and Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate) to daily diet, as well as adding GSE (antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic made from Grapefruit Seed Extract). The way GSE is administered as maintenance is by adding to the water for 3 weeks on and 1 week off. This is also effective in killing mouth bacteria.
