Natural Sunscreen For Pets

Coconut & Raspberry Seed Oil

Conventional sunscreens both for humans and pets, have many toxic ingredients that can cause harm. Everything that is applied to skin will get absorbed into the blood stream within 10-20 second. Pets also ingest products applied to their skin or by licking their fur. So the solution is to use natural pet sunscreen or to make a homemade sunscreen for dogs or cats using natural, pet friendly ingredients that will protect and nourish pet’s skin from the harmful sun rays.

Study by Oomah et al., 2000 in the Journal of Food Chemistry claims that:

“Raspberry seed oil has a high SPF. The optical transmission of raspberry seed oil, especially in the UV range (290±400 nm) was comparable to that of titanium dioxide preparations with sun protection factor for UVB (SPF) and protection factor for UV–A (PFA) values between 28-50 and 6.75-7.5, respectively (Kobo Products Inc., South Plainfield, NJ)”.

Quick Re-Cap on SPF

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) scale is measured by a sun screen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging the skin. If it takes 20 minutes for unprotected skin to start turning red, then using a SPF 15 sun-screen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer – about five hours.

To quote the Skin Cancer Foundation:

“Another way to look at it is in terms of percentages: SPF 15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF 50 keeps out 98 percent. They may seem like negligible differences, but if you are light-sensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, those extra percentages will make a difference. And as you can see, no sun-screen can block all UV rays.

But there are problems with the SPF model: First, no sun-screen, regardless of strength, should be expected to stay effective longer than two hours without re-application. Second, “reddening” of the skin is a reaction to UVB rays alone and shows a little about what UVA damage may be. Plenty of damage can be done without the red flag of sunburn being raised.

“Unfortunately, coconut oil blocks only an estimated 20 percent of the sun’s damaging rays. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends an SPF of 30 or higher, which will block 97 percent of these harmful rays. … In addition to sun-screen, there are other good ways to protect your skin from the sun.”

NOTE: LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL IS TOXIC FOR CATS !

Coconut oil has a natural SPF of 7.1 and contains antioxidants that help protect the skin from harmful radiation from the sun. Natural sun-screen! Obviously that low amount of SPF isn’t sufficient for a long day in the sun, so add red raspberry seed oil which has an SPF of roughly 25. For dogs you can optionally add Lavender essential oil.

Add red raspberry seed oil (for dogs only, you can add Lavender oil)

Once the oils are mixed well, pour into a small container.

When your pet is ready to be outdoors and in need of sun-screen you can spray some water on your pet and then take some of the home made sun screen and rub between your hands for it and apply on pets fur. Avoid eye area!
