TO CLEAN & WHAT TO USE TO CLEAN…
With all these sanitizing going on due to covid, I found myself using clorox wipes even more and on everything that is brought inside the house.
I have been pondering about house cleaning chemical and their safety around pets. Lately I found myself saying “those toxic cleaning products leave chemical residue and it is not safe for pets …”
For a long time, I have used dish soap, laundry detergent, hand soap, surface desinfectant and a few other natural products in my home.
It so happens that I was running low on clorox wipes and the plan was to go and attempt to get some, somewhere, when I got E mail from Dr. Karen Becker and one of the topics discussed in that E mail was…
How to Disinfect Your Home Without Harming Your Pet…
Here is the link to a full article by Dr. Karen Becker…
In her articlem Dr. Karen Becker presents a video of Ahna Brutlag, DVM, MS, DABT, DABVT, Director, Veterinary Services & Senior Veterinary Toxicologist.
Dr. Karen Becker was also live on Face Book with Rodney Habib, a very famous “Pet Blogger.” This is very informative and funny video.
The above video, entitled “Household cleaners can damage pets !” provided information on how to make 8 different household cleaning products that are completely natural & safe for pets…
Video mentions a study done by measuring dogs & cats urine and found 21 different PHTHALATEs in their system ! PHTHALATEs are chemicals that disrupt pets endocrine system. It negatively impacts pets thyroid gland, reproductive system and it was linked to certain types of cancer in pets as pancreatic & liver cancer.
So all those cleaners we use, leave a toxic residue whether your pets step on it while still vet or dry, chemicals will absorb through pets paws and it will affect them ! This is especially important when it comes to cats, as cats groom themselves and lick their paws more than dogs.
BLEACH & AMMONIA
According to experts, bleach or ammonia lead to respiratory problems, irritate pets mucus membranes, irritate eyes, nose and throat, aggravate asthma, cause “ton of skin problems”…
GLUCOL-ETHERS & FORMALDEHYDE
Ingredients as glycol-ethers and formaldehyde are found in majority of conventional household cleaners, however they are not listed as ingredients. Both of those are incredibly toxic for both pets and humans. Formaldehyde is carcinogen, leads to asthmatic issues in people and pets. It also causes kidney & liver damage.
FRAGRANCE & SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE
These two ingredients are found in everything… These ingredients lead to skin irritation and rashes, intermittent vomiting and mimic food allergies. This causes pets to constantly have rashes, to lick themselves, have irritated belly, armpits and abdomen.

# 2 Use Natural Household Cleaners
BIOKLEEN
Biokleen has a whole line of household cleaning products. I use dish wash soap from this company as it is one of very few products that does not contain SLS !
Biokleen Bac-Out for clean up of pet mess ! I used this in the past and I reordered again as this has enzymes 1 This can also be added to pet stinky laundry !
BETTER LIFE
Another products I use is Better Life. I first saw this on Shark Tank several years ago…
I use floor cleaner and all purpose cleaner from this company. However the floor cleaner does not have enzymes to remove & destroy pet urine !
The two above mentioned companies I mentioned on this page because I use their products. There are so many other home cleaners out there, that I have not used nor researched. They all claim to be natural and safe, however you would have to be very informed and educated or excellent researcher to be able to determine if those “NATURAL” products are indeed natural and safe as they claim to be.
Some of those products can be very pricey as well. So what is the alternative? Make your home cleaners yourself ! I still would use biokleen for urine remover !
I have used Nature’s Miracle Sunny Lemon Advance Cat Stain and Odor Eliminator 32 oz. And each time I used it I had terrible sneezing fits ! After adding this page I decided I had enough of breathing in chemicals and exposing myself and pets so I re ordered biokleen. A while ago, I remember wanting something stronger and less expensive than biokleen, but in reality, biokleen is less expensive than Nature’s Miracle line and works naturally to remove urine stains and smell.
